Monegros launch test

English
In our plan, the first step was the validation of our Stage2 on the ground, this means, throw our stage from the ground with all the limitations we have to attest that our Stage2 will be desired. So we decided to head towards the desert of Monegros (Zaragoza) to test our stage safely.

Test: Ground test of our stage, see the behavior, analyze the launch and see what can be improved.

Test results: We prepared a check list, but we failed a component that is not critical, we have to weld a mass and gas welder that we had, do not work (we think due the cold), this mass function is used to make our called "payload" formed by the GPS and our board AWIP to do a tracking of the stage, this was a secondary test for as we say before, our main objective in this test is to see the behavior of the stage. This is the first test (we have many miles) and arrive to the conclusion that if I was going well but that we did not, would launch the Stage2 also. So we skip the steps related to the recording of tracking and proceed to the following, we put Roberto and me each with cameras to capture the moment (a reasonable long distance) and Joshua do all pre-launch preparations. When is about to launch, the stage reached three meters making loops and drops to ten feet from where we launched, "a disaster? Was it expected?

Test conclusions: This test gives us a starting point, therefore, is not a disaster, says that we have much work ahead, lower weight and overall structure of payload and improve system reliability (chance is not an option)

Stage2 third burn

English
Following the validation of the stage2 we got to the third version of it. In this third prototype we decided to move to higher and place the savage amount of 7 grains (1 plant with its encapsulation of cardboard and its nozzle and 6 around without encapsulation or nozzle) with this configuration we reach the maximum capacity of the can. At first it wanted to put 8 grains (1 in the center and 7 around) but it was impossible to enter and so we opted for the 7-grain configuration. These 7 grains are not subject to the anothers and the can only be diposit a little resin on the bottom to support the central grain. Only the central grain is expected to igniter and the other 6 are switched to heat, pressure and fire to detach it. The can is coated with epoxy resin in order to support higher temperatures.

Test: The test is still the same, turn on the stage and see how it reacts.

Test result: The igniter works and lights up the stage this, but exploits a few moments of ignition by blowing up the grains that were not subject these to not be exposed to any pressure, which burned paper.

Test conclusions: very important to hold ALL the grains so that if there is an explosion (as in our case) they do not go flying around.

Castellano

Stage2 fifth burn

English
And with this we reach the fifth prototype of the Stage2 and come full of "improvements" (If we use the slang of the Formula 1 can say that for this prototype comes new developments). If recapitulate and reminisced about the rights and wrongs of the other prototypes we have our fifth stage, it consists of an insulating coating of epoxy resin on the inside of the can so that it could withstand the high temperatures generated, in this case we use a configuration central grain surrounded by five others naked grains, in this prototype beans that go around are covered with a layer of resin with fiber, so we contain grains and further protect the can (our weak link) is due to the augment in grain volume so we could not six grains and in the last two prototypes, we have also smoothed the crust of central grain board to laces and entry though pimples.

Test: More of the same, see the behavior of the can (and grains) in ignition.

Test result: The igniter fails, and we have many faults, then decided to ignite "manually" via a wick. This goes on and we see a perfect "wake", the can hold the entire process. At the end we see that the nozzle is clear because the resin that hold it has been burned.

Test conclusions: The test is a success (except that the igniter does not burn the grain), the can (remember, our weak link) hold for the first time a configuration of more than 1 grain. But here, even to amateurs, we are perfectionists and we see that the wake takes "jolts" due to the grains do not burn in unison, this certainly derive a serious departure from the stage if we would launch it. Our next step should be to think of a way to ensure that light up all at the same instant.

Castellano

Igniter & noozle test (Stage2 first burn)

English
In the last test we did the igniter decided to change the mode coupling the igniter with cable. In the other test we did was hook up the igniter "bare" (just the powder-filled bulb) inside the engine, seen the problems and the time it cost us to connect the cable to the igniter when to launch, we came up with the igniter with a 15 cm cable soldered to a connector at the other end, so we save time in preparation for takeoff, that we can release the igniter while we are trying to plug the cable into the rocket motor and cable as the cable is attached to the rocket burn, so it's better than blowing a 15-cm cable that does not have to go cutting a 150 cm. So we have a soldier igniter cord of 15 cm and epoxied to a motor amateur (for when we try) ready to be assembled in a rocket to be launched.

Test: Testing the "new" igniter, an amateur engine support for both tests and test a prototype nozzle. To this is to use a standard steel support where we are going to make a hole to pass the engine and we will weld a bracket to hold the can and it does not move, then we'll screw it to the ground (if case).

Test result: The igniter works perfectly, the engine is on and on for about 3 seconds, the can has a deformation.

Conclusions: At first we thought that the narrowing was an inplotion but later saw that no, due to heating of the can and push the nozzle, this is the shape of the can, in principle this is not a bad result because it shows that the nozzle works. The next step is to measure the nozzle thrust, that we'll make getting a hydraulic jack with a pressure sensor.

Castellano

Igniter test #3 (engine ignition)

English
Launch #2
Date: 10/30/1910 at 14:00
Location: Zaragoza
Weather: clear sky with light winds from the west (W).

Test: Test whether the igniter works with amateur rocket motor.
Production Stage: Same as launch #1 but this time the glass dome sticks "to brush strokes" and not to the mold.
Material: Rocket consisting of a soda can and a spherical crystal with overall dimensions of 57.6 x 169 mm and an engine model weco D7-3, an igniter, a PVC tube of 68 mm x 1m hole in lid with First, electrical cable of at least 1.5 m, 9-volt battery, connector 9-volt battery, a tester and tweezers.
Procedure (check list):
This procedure is going to "check" each time before launch.

  • Check if the igniter is continuous.
  • Place the igniter within the amateur rocket motor.
  • Paste the igniter with epoxy resin, not to put resin on top, one in the ass.
  • Pass the cable through the hole in the PVC cap.
  • Connect to the igniter end of the party that runs inside the PVC pipe.
  • Carefully insert the rocket by sliding to the bottom as you stretch the cable so there is no cable inside, under any circumstances enter the rocket pulling the cord.
  • Insert the connector to the battery of 9 V.
  • Turn on ground cameras.
  • Check one last time if there is continuity.
  • Place the vertical tube resting on the ground.
  • Turn on the camera tube.
  • Connect the 9 V battery

Test result: OK. The igniter worked perfectly. Lit the stage and this shot came up but about 15 to 20 m starts to spiral to its peak, the descent is very stable. Is mid stage and see that it has released the glass dome, this may be because this time the engine played the dome and with a movement of only millimeters to this union have broken resin or perhaps with the final explosion of the engine has been released, having no found the launch #1 stage we don't know if this also endured or released so we don't know if the problem is the union of epoxy resin that we used in this launch.

Lanzamiento #2

Igniter test #2 (engine ignition)

English
Launch # 1
Date: 10/29/1910 at 5:00 PM
Weather: clear sky, moderate wind from the East (E)
Location: Zaragoza.
Test: Test whether the igniter works with amateur rocket motor.

Production Stage: Use a can of soda from the elongated which removes the part where is the opening where you drink, your "ass" is asked a circular opening the diameter of amateur rocket motor, within the same is placed beside the glass hemisphere is not just a candle poses a well known multinational company, this is pasted with epoxy resin using a mold made with another can of soda the same diameter. Resin is applied twice, once dry, the excess is removed by the lathe and a radio to make it more aerodynamic. The engine is stuck in the hole with epoxy resin and fiber.

  • Turn ground cameras.
  • Check if you have seen continuous cable.
  • Place the vertical tube resting on the ground.
  • Turn on the camera tube.
  • Connect the 9 V battery

Test result: OK. The igniter worked perfectly, the stage lit shot out of the tube upward bending due to wind. When approaching its peak stage start making loops until it begins to fall in a straight line, this shows that the stage has a pretty good stability.

Lanzamiento #1

    Stage2 prototype #3 Presure test

    English
On Monday October 18 we did the pressure test for the prototype #3 of the Stage2.

Prototype # 3: (see pictures #1 to 3) This prototype includes several changes from the prototype #2, one is that we have included the direction control output and the other we have sealed with epoxy resin on the
"nozzle's" back side which in set to "pressure test" is the side where you insert the nitrogen pressure through the fitting. This was not done in the prototype #2 as it has a rather complex process.

    Presu
re Tesut: (see picture #4 & 5) For this presure test we have used the same elements that we use the prototype #2.

    Test result:
(see picture #6) We see the start inserting nitrogen into the can there is a loss (very small) in the direction control output, we believe this is very small and that gives more realism to the test so we decided to pull ahead. We see this prototype passes the same deformation as the prototype #2 but with more pressure, in this case we get up to 31 bars, this is 6 more bars, thanks to the resin we have put behind and that the prototype #2 was not .

    Castellano

Stage 2 prototype #4 presure Test

    English
With the latest prototype reached a reasonable enough pressure, not sufficient for our purposes yet. Our gauge gives anymore, is 32 bars and we need our stage support higher pressures. So we came up with a solution where we had the fitting that connected our stage with the pressure hose, we decided to put there a high pressure gauge.
For this you have to make a larger dock where you can screw the gauge and the other end to the fitting.
To avoid the problem of deformation of the can's "ass", we decided to create a double boost with a rivet. The part of the hill we did this time without the output to control direction, as in proptotipo # 2 and sealed everything with epoxy resin.

Test results: The tests do not give good results, the losses are huge and do not get pressure on the can. In a display of stupidity we believe that the problem is the high-pressure gauge, buy another and give the same result, a week lost, tired and desperate we decided to put the can into a bucket with water and see where the leak to seal it out, the surprise is great when we see that the prototype # 4 leaking everywhere apply the uninón of the can, apply the union of the gauge (even sealed), the junction with the wall and the fitting and even the bulkhead.

Test conclusions: Stage defective, discard it and think a better way to make high pressure in the stage.

    Castellano

    Stage2 prototype #2 Presure test

On Friday October 12 we made a test of the prototype test #2 of the second stage or "Stage2", a month earlier, had done a pressure test with the prototype #1 with the result: withstand pressure 7 bar. This test was made with a prototype nozzle mounted, seeing the bad result of this test having been made by injecting pressurized air directly with a pressure gun without any insulation and bearing in mind that the can would have to withstand very high pressure was decided to change the course of action and thought a more reliable way of introducing air under pressure and who had not lost, this is to replace the prototype for a fitting nozzle, this helps us to hold a high-pressure hose a clamp.

Prototype #2: (see picture #1 & 2) This is a coca-cola can which you have removed one of the covers and which are carried for a hole in the other, is inserted through the side without the connector attached to cover an aluminum support for the open side are fitted with a tin lid inside another sealed with resin and fiber epoxy inside and out, on the side of fitting only epoxy resin is applied on the outside, serious side connector the "ass" of the can.

Pressure Test: (See picture #3 & 4) For this test requires the Settings Stage2 "pressure test" (ie replacing the nozzle for a fitting), a bottle of air, nitrogen, compressed argon (in our case nitrogen), a hose capable of withstand high pressures, a manometer (we use a pressure reducer that reaches up to 34 bars) and a safety deposit box in case there are violent explosions, this should be a thick resistant material such as wood, steel, etc.Security is very important so you must maintain the placement of the elements used in the test to prevent further damage.

Test result: (see picture #5 to 8) we see that the can begin to warp from the 20 bars by the "ass" where the fitting until, at about 25 bars, this gives no break but causing leaks from the resin no longer acts as sealant.
